1.7.19 SIN test

The Speech in Noise (SIN) test is a method of testing a patient's f unctional hearing in the presence of
competing sound (Taylor, 2003). The objective of this is to identif y their f unctional hearing ability and higher
processing which allows them to sort between usef ul (speech/signal) and irrelevant (noise/masking)
inf ormation (Taylor, 2003). The outcome of this investigation will give a Speech Recognition Threshold (SRT)
f or a varying Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR).
This type of testing is dif ferent f rom Tone Audiometry as it involves higher areas of the Auditory pathway as
the inf ormation needs to be heard, sorted, and understood to determine if it is usef ul or not (Marrone et al.,
2008).
The SIN test is designed to be perf ormed via loudspeaker as it is a f ree f ield test. However, it can be
conf igured to perf orm monaurally via selection of headphones and routing the masking to the same output.
The SIN test is very similar to Speech Audiometry and can use any of the materials you have already ripped
into your Interacoustics Suite sof tware. However, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio is maintained automatically by
the sof tware f ollowing a correct or incorrect response to the stimulus, this helps to speed up the test time.
When should I perform the SIN test?
It is normal to perf orm this f ollowing Tone Audiometry as it gives a good indicator of the patient s
perf ormance f or speech in noise. It can also be used bef ore and af ter the provision of hearing aids to give an
identif ication of the benef it achieved through amplif ication (Marrone, Mason and Kidd, 2008).
Test procedure
1. Launch the Af f inity
2. Click on the AUD tab on the upper right-hand side of the screen. Ensure that your Audiometry has
been perf ormed ahead of advancing into the SIN test as this determines the start level f or the test.
3.
Click on Menu, Tests and then select SIN
4. Once in the SIN test screen, the stimuli levels should be set f or you. These are based on the patient
audiogram and the PTA score.
