2.14 Verification with visible speech mapping

2.14.1 Considerations before you begin

Visible Speech Mapping can be run side by side with the relevant f itting software. Af ter f itting the hearing aid,
Visible Speech Mapping can be used to verif y if the client's speech area is amplif ied suf f iciently using these
stimuli: ISTS, Male Speech, or Female Speech.
Visible Speech Mapping can be used as a verif ication measure and does theref ore not necessarily need to
be perf ormed together with an Insertion Gain measurement. Visible Speech Mapping provides a precise
measure of the SPL at the ear drum matched up to a f itting target selected by the clinician.
The f ollowing description introduces the clinical use of Visible Speech Mapping. The system can be used in
all sorts of ways. Clients have very dif f erent needs, and this section demonstrates the options of fered by the
system.

2.14.2 Visible speech mapping (in ear mode)

1) Open the REM440 module.
2) Select a test protocol that includes Visible Speech Mapping in the List of Protocols.
3) Explain the procedure to the client.
4) Perf orm otoscopic examination.
5) Mount the probe tube on the in-situ headset and place it on the client who should be seated ½-1
meters f rom the speaker.
Ensure that the probe tubes are calibrated bef ore placing them in the ear canal (see section 0 about
tube calibration).
6) Caref ully insert the hearing aid without moving the probe tube. Ensure that the
instruments are switched on.
If f itting an open hearing aid solution, perf orm Calibrate for open fit (see section 0).

8) Click on the Visible Speech Mapping button if it is not already marked automatically.
Note: A right click on Visible Speech Mapping button allows you to enter the Settings
menu or Change colour of the curve.
9) Check that the inf ormation about client, f itting prescription and hearing aid to the right
are correct by pressing Show fitting prescription and test information.
