Troubleshooting

Symptom
1. Brakes are poor or do not apply.
2. Uneven braking or uneven lining
wear.
3. Adjusted stroke is too long and no
adjustment
4. Adjusted stroke is too short or
linings drag.

Probable Cause
a. Insufficient air pressure.
b. Restriction or leak in lines,
valves, etc.
c. Brakes out of adjustment.
d. Leaking diaphragm.
a. Ruptured diaphragm.
b. Brakes out of adjustment.
c. Grease on the lining.
d. Glazed lining.
e. Shoes installed backwards.
f. Combination linings.
a. Clevis installed at wrong angle
b. Excessive wear between
clevis and collar
c. Loose jam nut at clevis
d. Worn clevis pin bushing in
slack arm.
e. Weak or broken return spring
in air chamber
f. Spring brake does not retract
fully.
g. Worn or stripped teeth on
pawl or actuator.
h. Excessive looseness between
splines of camshaft.
i. Worn components in brake.
a. Clevis installed at
angle.
b. Loose jam nut at clevis.
c. Spring brake does not retract
fully.
d. Wrong brake adjustment
e. Poor contact between linings
and drum, or drum is out-of-
round.

Solution
a. Check for the correct pressure
at the compressor and brake
air chambers.
b. Check all lines, valves, etc.,
for leaks or restrictions.
c. Adjust the brakes.
d. Replace the diaphragm.
a. Replace the diaphragm.
b. Adjust the brakes.
c. Replace the lining.
d. Replace the lining.
e. Reverse the shoes.
f. Remove
replace with the correct style.
a. Install clevis correctly

c. Tighten to specification
