to insure correct assembly of the
plug in the printed circuit. If the
printed circuit should become de-
fective, it should be replaced as
it is not practical to repair it.
An accessory block is an integral
part of the instrument panel wir-
ing harness. This block makes it
possible to connect the wiring for
the following options quickly and
easily: Guide-Matic, E l e c t r o -
Cruise, speedometer buzzer, rear
window defroster and courtesy
light.
b. Removal and Installation of
Instrument Cluster Assembly
The complete instrument cluster
seldom needs to be removed un-
less the printed circuit is defec-
tive. The speedometer, the clock
and ' 'telltale'' lights, or the gas
gauge can each be removed with-
out disturbing t h e
instrument
cluster. Each of these three as-
semblies can
be removed by
s i m p l y removing one or two
screws and pulling the assembly
out of the housing. See Figure
10-75 for the attaching screw
locations.
NOTE: When
r e m o v i n g
the
speedometer assembly from the
instrument cluster housing, it is
not necessary to disconnect the
speedo cable. You only have to"
disconnect the speedo cable when
the entire cluster housing is being
removed.
When it becomes necessary to
remove the instrument cluster
housing (to replace a defective
printed circuit for instance), pro-
ceed as follows:
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove i n s t r u m e n t
panel
cover. See Figure 10-81.
3. Remove radio control knobs
and remove center cove molding
from left and right cove moldings
since these overlap. See Figure
10-76.
4. Disconnect wiring from igni-
tion switch, light switch, printed
circuit and wiper switch.
5. Disconnect speedo cable from
instrument cluster housing. See
Figure 10-75.
6. Disconnect left v e n t control
cable from left cove molding.
7. Remove (6) nuts that attach the
left cove molding to the instru-
ment panel frame.
See Figure
10-76.
8. Remove (4) screws on under-
side of cluster housing that at-
tach the housing to the instrument
panel frame. See Figure 10-76.
9. Drop the steering column down
by removing the two U-clamp
bolts. See Figure 10-76.
NOTE: Care should be taken not
to bend the shift indicator pointer.
10. Pull out the
i n s t r u m e n t
cluster housing.
