5.1.3
General information on expansion modules
Figure 5-2
Application
The expansion modules provide additional inputs and outputs for a central unit. Expansion
modules always have to be connected to a central unit.
Power-up/self-test
Once the power supply has been applied, all the devices perform a self-test. During this
phase, the LEDs of the central unit and the expansion modules light up (lamp test). When
the system has powered up, the self-test is complete, and the device is in safety or test
mode, the LEDs light up in accordance with the pending signals.
Module replacement
Switch off the supply voltage to replace an expansion module. Replace the expansion
module with an identical version. When the supply voltage has been switched on again, the
central unit transfers the parameterization data. When the self-test has been successfully
executed, the expansion module is ready for operation.

Expansion module 4/8F-DI
Properties
The expansion module 4/8F-DI supplements the central unit. It can be used up to Category 4
in accordance with EN 954-1, SIL 3 in accordance with IEC 61508, and PL e in accordance
with EN ISO 13849-1:2006.
Additional expansion modules can be connected to the expansion module 4/8F-DI.
Parameterization is carried out via the central unit with MSS ES.
