5.1.2 What You Need to Know

The following terms and concepts may help you as you read through the chapter.
LAN
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a shared communication system to which many
computers are attached. A LAN, as its name implies, is limited to a local area.
WAN
WANs link geographically dispersed locations in other cities or around the globe
including switched and permanent telephone circuits, terrestrial radio systems and
satellite systems.
DNS
Use DNS (Domain Name System) to map a domain name to its corresponding IP
address and vice versa. For instance, the IP address of www.zyxel.com is
204.217.0.2. The DNS server is extremely important because without it, you must
know the IP address of any network device before you can access it.The ISP (or
network administrator) should tell you the DNS server addresses, usually in the
form of an information sheet, when you sign up.
DDNS
Dynamic DNS maps your dynamic IP address to a static domain name. You can
have a static hostname alias for a dynamic IP address, allowing the host to be
more easily accessible from various locations on the Internet. You must register
for this service with a Dynamic DNS service provider to use this service.
NTP
Network Time Protocol allows devices to synchronize their time setting with an
external time server.
