Notification of New Messenger Item or Ping

Just like email, you will see new
BlackBerry Messenger items on
your home screen with a red
asterisk at the very top next to the
time and also on the Messenger icon itself.

Ping a Contact

Let's say that you wanted to reach a BlackBerry
Messenger contact quickly. One option available
to you is to PING!!! that contact. When you ping a
BlackBerry user, their device will vibrate once to
let them know that they are wanted/needed
immediately.
TIP: You can set your BlackBerry to vibrate
or not vibrate when you receive a ping in
your BlackBerry Messenger Options screen.
And you will also see the ping in your
Messages inbox.
Using the My Status BlackBerry Messenger Options (Your
Availability to Others)
Sometimes you might not want to be disrupted with instant messages. You can change
your status to Unavailable and you won't be disturbed. Conversely, one of your contacts
might be offline, so to speak, and you want to know when they become available. You
can even set an alert to notify you of their availability.
