9-28 Upgrading Your Server
Notice
Observe the following notes on configuring a RAID System:
The installed hard disk drives (SAS drives or SATA drives) must the same capacity and
the same rotational speed. (The minimum number of required disks depends on the
configuration of RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive [Independent] Disks).)
Select/set a RAID level "RAID0", "RAID1", "RAID10", "RAID5", "RAID50", or
"RAID6".
When installing a system in an internal hard disk drive, you should use "Express Setup" to perform
all the procedures for RAID System configuration, OS installation, and then OS setup.
Use Express Setup even when not installing a system. Start Express Setup, select [OS Selection] →
[Others]. The installer automatically performs all the procedures for RAID System configuration,
and then maintenance utility installation.
When making the setup in manual mode, use the RAID System configuration utility in the chip on
the board. You can start the utility during execution of POST that automatically starts immediately
after you turn on the server power switch. For details, see the document in the NEC
EXPRESSBUILDER DVD-ROM provided with the server. (The utility varies depending on the
RAID Controller.) For details on the data transfer rate, RAID, and RAID System configuration, see
the manual provided with the RAID Controller as well as the document.
IMPORTANT: When N8103-129/130 is installed, do not let the system
enter hibernation or standby mode.
Replacing Hard Disk Drives in RAID System
In the RAID System, the auto rebuild function can be used. The auto rebuild function can record the
information saved in a defected hard disk drive into the new replaced disk to recover the server to
the state before the occurrence of the fault.
The auto rebuild function is valid for RAID System of RAID1, RAID5, or RAID6.
The auto rebuild is automatically started only by the hot-swap of a defected hard disk drive (or disk
replacement in the power-on state). During the auto rebuild, the disk lamp on the hard disk drive is
lit green or amber alternatively.
Obey the following cautions when the auto rebuild function is used.
Do not turn off the power of the server in the interval from a fault of a hard disk drive to
the end of the auto rebuild.
Install a new hard disk drive after the interval of 90 seconds or longer has passed from the
removal of the defected hard disk drive.
If a hard disk drive is being rebuilt, do not replace another disk. (The disk lamp on the
hard disk being rebuilt is lit green or amber alternatively.)
