D. Primary Charging (step 2)

The surface of the drum is evenly charged to
positive potential by the primary charging assem-
bly to ensure primary potential.
The surface potential of the charged drum is
determined by the potential of the grid; therefore,
the grid is grounded through a varistor to ensure
a specific surface potential.
