1 Description

1.1 Intended purpose

The Ottobock Ankle Seven Carbon Fiber Spring facilitates the fabrication of light lower leg or-
thoses that are subject to high dynamic loads. The special design allows energy to be stored
in the carbon fiber spring during heel strike and releases it again at toe-off, so that people who
wear orthoses can walk naturally and expend less energy doing so. The orthosis does not have
any mechanical orthosis joint and is therefore described as jointless.

1.2 Special features of the carbon fiber spring

The special design of the carbon fiber spring takes into consideration a natural outer foot position
of 7° (see figure 1) from the dorsal perspective. This means that once a suitable plaster model
has been prepared and constructed, the patient's foot during walking will have something close
to a physiological alignment (see sketch 2). The outer position of the carbon fiber spring in the
bending area makes it possible to provide support for a more beneficial roll-over.

1.3 Indications and contraindications

The carbon fiber spring is designed exclusively for use with lower extremity orthoses and with the
functional defects listed here:
Paralysis or weakness of foot levering and/or foot dropping. Weakness of the knee extensor
(muscle tone for the knee extensor >3 according to Janda). For example, spina bifida or other
neuromuscular diseases, post-traumatic conditions).
Not illustrated here is a fitting in the case of equinus position with more than a 25 mm reduction,
sever spasticity or other causes that seriously compromise the patient's ability to walk.
The right fiber strength of the carbon fiber spring is selected on the basis of body weight and de-
gree of activity by using the classification system below. It is required that the patient can walk.
The requirements made of the feather spring's strength are greater for active users of orthoses,
i.e. those that run.
INFORMATION
The classification cited applies to AFO ortheses.
The use of carbon springs for KAFO ortheses may require a deviation from the classification.
