Streaming Method Overview

The streaming method used by the SME 211 should be selected based on the application.
Unicast streaming is typically used for on-demand or point-to-point (one-to-one) video
connections and has a minimal impact on the network infrastructure or configuration.
Multicast streaming is typically used for live multicasting a "one-to-many" session when it is
necessary to reach a wide audience with multiple viewers receiving the stream concurrently.
Multicasting has broader implications for the network infrastructure and configuration.

Protocols Used for Streaming

Streaming protocols may be selected based on the streaming method and the SME 211
capability. The following transport layer protocols can be used for streaming from the
SME 211.
RTSP (Pull)
Unicast
Multicast
RTP (over UDP)
RTP (over UDP)
Interleaved
(RTSP/RTP over TCP)
The transport protocols are explained further in the following section. For information on
how to change the SME 211 transport protocol, see
page 32.
Unicast Streaming Method — An Overview
Unicast streaming is used for point-to-point streaming of audio and video and offers a
variety of streaming protocol options. A single SME 211 can support several unicast
connections concurrently from each encoder within the limits presented on the next page. It
can be used where the network infrastructure does not support multicast traffic.
With Push streams, the stream from the SME 211 becomes active immediately on the
network, but the receiver must accept the stream before it can be decoded and displayed.
With Pull streams, the SME 211 waits for individual viewing devices to request the stream
before beginning transmission on the network.
