Drive Condition
Propeller Shaft Noise
Universal Joint Noise
PROPELLER SHAFT BALANCE
NOTE: Removing and indexing the propeller shaft
180° relative to the yoke may eliminate some vibra-
tions.
If pr opeller sh a ft is su spect ed of bein g ou t of ba l-
a n ce, ver ify wit h t h e followin g pr ocedu r e:
(1) P la ce veh icle in n et r u a l.
(2) Ra ise a n d su ppor t t h e veh icle by t h e a xles a s
level a s possible.
(3) Clea n a ll for eign m a t er ia l fr om pr opeller sh a ft
a n d u n iver sa l join t s.
(4) In spect pr opeller sh a ft for m issin g ba la n ce
weigh t s, br oken welds, a n d ben t a r ea s.
NOTE: If propeller shaft is bent, it must be replaced.
(5) In spect u n iver sa l join t s for wea r, pr oper ly
in st a lled a n d cor r ect a lign m en t wit h t h e sh a ft .

DRI V ELI N E V I BRAT I ON
Possible Cause
1) Undercoating or other foreign
material on shaft.
2) Loose U-joint clamp screws.
3) Loose or bent U-joint yoke or
excessive runout.
4) Incorrect driveline angularity.
5) Rear spring center bolt not in
seat.
6) Worn U-joint bearings.
7) Propeller shaft damaged or out
of balance.
8) Broken rear spring.
9) Excessive runout or unbalanced
condition.
10) Excessive drive pinion gear
shaft runout.
11) Excessive axle yoke deflection.
12) Excessive transfer case
runout.
1) Loose U-joint clamp screws.
2) Lack of lubrication.

Correction
1) Clean exterior of shaft and wash
with solvent.
2) Install new clamps and screws
and tighten to proper torque.
3) Install new yoke.
4) Measure and correct driveline
angles.
5) Loosen spring u-bolts and seat
center bolt.
6) Install new U-joint.
7) Installl new propeller shaft.
8) Install new rear spring.
9) Re-index propeller shaft, test,
and evaluate.
10) Re-index propeller shaft and
evaluate.
11) Inspect and replace yoke if
necessary.
12) Inspect and repair as neces-
sary.
1) Install new clamps and screws
and tighten to proper torque.
2) Replace as U-joints as neces-
sary.
