System Overview
The Dose Control System Version 4 provides a means of
managing the amount of radiation experienced by workers in
Radiologically Controlled Areas.
Each worker entering the area collects a small electronic device
called an EPD, or Electronic Personal Dosemeter. On entry,
they insert the EPD into an Access Control Workstation and
register their Personal Identification and the code for the Task
they are to carry out.
The system loads the EPD with the permissible levels for
radiation dose and dosage rate for the task. It also checks the
worker's records to ensure that they are authorised to receive
such a dose, before allowing access to the controlled area.
The worker carries the EPD throughout the time in the
controlled area, and it records the radiation it actually receives.
If either the total dose or the dosage rate exceed the permissible
levels set, the EPD warns the worker by audible and visual
alarms.
On leaving the controlled area, the worker again inserts their
EPD into an Access Control Workstation, and the actual
radiation recorded by the EPD is added to the worker's records
in the Dose Control System database. The EPD is cleared,
ready for another worker to use it.
