2.4 Construction and function (Fig. 2 + 3)
During the initial design of these knee joints the highest priority was given to the large flexion
angle and the new kind of efficient swing phase control. The upper joint section (1) and lower
joint section (2) are connected by the anterior links (3) and the posterior link (4) to form a four-bar
linkage. In extension, the instantaneous center of rotation is located above the joint and behind
the weight bearing line, thus providing knee stability in the stance phase. To control swing phase,
the pneumatic unit is linked to the upper joint section with a connecting rod. The resistances for
flexion and extension are independently and individually adjustable. Reversing action of the exten-
sion assist occurs at approx. 110°. The distal portion of the pneumatic cylinder is fabricated as
a tube clamp and accommodates the provided tube adapter.
Another advantage is the very large knee flexion angle, which goes far beyond the usual range.
The joint does not feature a flexion stop bumper. A flexion angle of more than 170° is technically
possible, and is limited only by the corresponding socket connectors, socket shapes or by the
cosmetic foam cover (Fig. 3).
2.5 Different connection systems
The 3R106 Knee Joint is available in 4 different versions. They differ from each other solely by the
type of proximal connection used (see front page):
