the surge, examine the turbine assembly, refer to the engine
maintenance manual.
2.

Power train:

a. Remove the magnetic chip detectors from the
transmission and the tail rotor gearbox. Examine the chip
detectors for metal particles. If no metal particles are found on
the chip detector, clean and install them. If metal particles are
found return the component for an overhaul. Record the reason
for the overhaul in the component records.
b. Remove the tail rotor gearbox inspection port plug. Use
a strong light to examine the contact patterns of the pinion gear.
If there is no sign of scuffing, scoring or other mechanical
damage install the gearbox port plug and cover. Torque the
gearbox attaching hardware. If the gear contact patterns are
damaged remove the gearbox for an overhaul. Make an entry in
the component records that a compressor stall was the reason
for removal.
c. Remove both transmission input quills and examine the
pinion gear contact patterns. Use a 10X power magnifying glass
to examine for scoring and other mechanical damage. If
damage is found, return the transmission for and overhaul and
make an entry in the component records that a compressor stall
is the reason for removal. Remove both main driveshafts and do
an overhaul. Do a magnetic particle inspection. The main rotor
mast assembly can be kept in service.

flight status. Remove and examine the chip detectors between 5
and 10 hours of flight time. Return the component for an
overhaul if metal particles are found, and make an entry in the
component records that the reason for removal is for a
compressor stall.
e. Visually examine the components that follow:
(1) Tail rotor bearing hanger assemblies.
(2) Tail rotor driveshaft transmission coupling.
