A hard landing is any incident or accident in which the helicopter
impacts the ground hard enough to cause severe pitch
movement of the main rotor. The impact can cause cracks or
yields to the transmission or fluid mount support structure or
unusually high loads on the landing gear.
A hard landing with a retractable landing-gear helicopter is any
landing that forces correctly serviced tires and/or shock struts to
compress to the bottom of travel. This also applies to high side
loads on any of the retractable landing gear.
Conditions at touchdown that could cause a hard landing are as
follows:
• high rate of descent
• high sideward speed
• high roll angle together with normal descent speeds
• high yaw angle together with normal forward landing
speed
• landing with forward airspeed on soft or unprepared
ground
