Stacking Guidelines

This section lists general guidelines to building a VCStack of x550
Switches. Stacking guidelines different depending on the version of the
AlliedWare Plus management software on the switches. (Instructions in
Chapter 6, "Building the Trunk with Default Stacking Ports 17 and 21" on
page 125 and Chapter 7, "Building the Trunk with Optional Stacking Ports"
on page 143 explain how to display the version numbers of the
management software.)
Here are general stacking guidelines that apply regardless of the
AlliedWare Plus version number:
The default setting for stacking on x550 Series switches is
enabled.
No additional software or licenses are required.
The switches of a stack can be the same or different x550 Series
models.
A stack of x550 Series switches cannot contain other stacking
switches, such as x600 or x610 Series switches.
The switches of a stack must be connected with a stack trunk
consisting of two ports or transceiver slots on each device.
Do not install a networking device, such as a media converter or
Ethernet switch, between two stacking ports or transceivers.
Here are stacking guidelines for AlliedWare Plus v5.4.7A-0 management
software:
A stack cannot have more than two x550 Series switches.
You must use the 40Gbps QSFP+ transceiver ports 17 and 21 for
the stack trunk.
Here are stacking guidelines for AlliedWare Plus v5.4.8-0.2 or later
management software:
A stack can have up to four x550 Series switches.
You can use either two 10Gbps ports or the two 40Gbps QSFP+
transceiver ports 17 and 21 as the stack trunk. Ports 17 and 21 are
the default stack trunk.
SFP+ or QSFP+ transceivers used for a stack trunk must be from
Allied Telesis. Switches will not form a stack with transceivers from
other network equipment providers. For a list of supported
transceivers, refer to the product's data sheet on the Allied Telesis
web site.
