Coat the inside surface of the new cylinder end seal
with power steering fluid.
Install the cylinder end seal onto the steering rack
with its grooved side toward the piston,
Push in the cvlinder end seal with your finger.
CAUTION: Wh.n irstalling the cylindsr ond 3eal,
b6 csreful not damage the sealing face ol th€ seal
with the threads and burrs at the stakad position of
the cylinder housing.

Remove the vinyl tape from the steering rack.
NOTE: Remove any residue of tape adhesive.
Hold the steering gearbox using a C-clamp as shown.

power steering fluid, then install the cylinder end by
screwing it into the cylinder housing
Remove the C-cl8mp from the steering gearbox.
After tightening the cylinder end, stake the point of
t h e c y l i n d e r h o u s i n g s h o w n b e l o w . F o r ' 9 8 m o d e l
go to step 51.
NOTE: Stake the cylinder in the position opposite
from where the stake was removed during disas-
semblY.

49. Select the 32 mm shim(s) ('96 -'97 model only).
N O T E : O n l y r e i n s t a l l t h e o r i g i n a l 3 2 m m s h i m ( s )
when the steering gearbox is reassembled without
replacing the pinion shaft, valve housing, and gear-
box housing with new ones.

housing are replaced, select the new shimls) as fol-
lows.
Shim selestion:
a.
Set the four 32 mm shims on the bearing surface of
t h e g e a r b o x h o u s i n g . T o t a l t h i c k n e s s o f t h e t o u r
shims should equal no more than 0,70 mm.
Shim set: four 32 mm shims (Thickness: 0,10 mm,
0.15 mm, 0,20 mm, 0.25 mm respectively)
CAUTION; Tho four 32 mm shims do not havo
thickness identification ma1k3. Measuro iho thick-
nass of each shim using a micromster, and mark
the shim for identitication.
