1c. Powdery Samples
To observe a powdery sample, sprinkle it onto a conducting double-sided tape or
paste, and blow off excess powder using a blower or an air duster gun. Unfixed
samples can contaminate the inside of the column, causing image failure.
1d. Insulators
When a non-conductive specimen is observed in the standard mode, it can be
charged, resulting in image deviation and brightness/contrast change. In such a case,
select the charge-up reduction mode from the observation mode (see 4.2.5 and 4.3.6 5.).
1e. Magnetized Samples
Magnetized samples can stick to the objective lens. They can also adversely affect
the imaging due to magnetic deflection of an electron beam. Such samples can be
observed by completely demagnetizing them.
Examples: Magnets and magnetic recording media, etc.
1f. Other Examples
Substances harmful to human bodies and environment, unfixed samples and living
things should not be observed.
NOTE : Because the specimen chamber is evacuated, some specimens, when observed,
can damage the system. Avoid observing such specimens, or observe them after
they are pre-treated appropriately.
