Universal Serial Bus (USB) port problems

Use this information to diagnose and resolve USB port problems in the blade server.
IBM updates the support website with the latest tips and techniques that you can use to resolve any
problems. Go to the BladeCenter support search website at http://www.ibm.com/supportportal/ to see if any
service bulletins have been generated. In the Search field, type 7875, retain tip, and chassis.
The USB ports are shared BladeCenter unit resources. First, make sure that the USB ports are assigned to
the blade server; then, see the following table and "Solving shared BladeCenter resource problems" on page
258.
Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is
solved.

Symptom
A USB device does not work.
Action
1. To determine whether the problem is caused by the software, make sure that:
• The blade server has the minimum memory that is needed to use the
software. For memory requirements, see the information that comes with the
software.
Note: If you have just installed an adapter or memory, the blade server might
have a memory-address conflict.
• The software is designed to operate on the blade server.
• Other software works on the blade server.
• The software works on another server.
2. If you receive any error messages while you use the software, see the
information that comes with the software for a description of the messages and
suggested solutions to the problem.
3. Contact your place of purchase of the software.
Action
1. Check the function of the shared BladeCenter unit resources. See "Solving
shared BladeCenter resource problems" on page 258.
2. Make sure that:
• The operating system supports USB devices.
• The correct USB device driver is installed. For the latest device drivers, go to
http://www.ibm.com/supportportal/.
3. (Trained technician only) Replace the system-board assembly. See "Removing
the system-board assembly" on page 71 and "Installing the system-board
assembly" on page 71.
