Stimulus
Key input sequence via a telephone in order to enable or disable features.
Subnet mask
A subnet mask or net mask consists of four numbers and is structured analogue to an IP ad-
dress. Possibly it is allocated by the ISP in the context of the TCP/IP information. It makes it
possible to define IP addresses, which are limited to a certain network (contrary to valid IP ad-
dresses which are recognized within the whole Internet).
Switch
Possibility to connect several computers to a network. In former times also hubs were used.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol. Standard protocol for the data transfer within
the Internet.
Terminal
General term for a device connected to the telephone system. This can be a telephone, fax
machine, modem, PC card, etc.
UDP
One of the protocols on which the Internet is based. UDP does not provide the correction of
errors - contrary to TCP, which controls during data transfer that the data packets reach the
target computer correctly sorted.
UPS
Uninterruptible Power Supply. Additional device that maintains the functionality of the telephone
system for a limited time in case of a power failure.
Upstream
Data stream to the Internet.
Virtual Server
Possibility to use server applications behind a firewall by targeted transmission of the used ports
to a well-defined IP address.
WAN
Wide-Area-Network. A WAN is the interconnection of several LANs via high-speed trunk lines. A
typical example is the Internet.
WAN PING allowed This is an additional security function of the router. If this function is disabled, users of the WAN
cannot execute a PING for the router. The router does not answer to the PING.
WEP
Wired Equivalent Privacy with 40(64) and 128-Bit-encoding. Method for data encoding before
data transfer.
WLAN (Wireless
WLANs are radio-based networks according to standard 802.11. Communication is usually ef-
LAN)
fected via a central node, the access point, which also establishes the connection to the wire
network. In order to complicate the tapping of data, WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is used.
