direct dialling of extension numbers is possible (also see DDI).
Port
Input / output channel of a network computer running TCP/IP. Various Internet applications need
certain ports for communication.
PPP
Point-to-Point-Protocol. Standard protocol enabling connections for example via the telephone
circuit network.
PPPoE
Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. PPPoE is a procedure for secure data transfer, which had
originally been developed for dialling-in connections. PPPoE is suitable for Ethernet connections
as is usually used for DSL connections.
PPTP
Point-to-Point tunnelling protocol. Dialling-in protocol, e.g. for DSL connections in Austria.
Programming tone
Special tone indicating that the user is in the programming mode.
Protocol
Rules for data transmission and reception.
Radio cell
Range covered by the antenna of a radio station.
Router
A device used during data transfer which checks the target address of a message and selects
the best route. A router receives data packets from a network, processes them for the data con-
nections and network layer protocols and finally sends them to another network via suitable data
connections and network layer protocols.
S
bus
An S

via a 4-core cable connected to the telephone system. The connected terminals can be config-
ured in any manner. A maximum of 8 terminals can be connected to one bus.
S
port
Term for an ISDN connection. The S

channel. A connection can be set up via each of the S
trolled via the D-channel.
Server
A computer which is connected to the network and shares resources with other network users.
Service identification With ISDN, incoming calls are subdivided according to different services. Service identification
ensures that terminals only signal calls for which they support service identification.
Single-person
Operating mode of the telephone system where externals callers hear the busy tone as soon as
operation
one extension is busy.
Splitter
Part of a DSL system installed at a customer, which provides for the separation (splitting) of the
two frequency bands for telephone / ISDN (up to 120 kHz) and DSL (from 138 kHz onwards),
which are both transmitted via the subscriber's line.
SSID
Service Set Identifier. This answerback code is entered by the provider in form of access points
per software and can be selected at choice. With a SSID it is possible to assign defined names
to the devices in order to distinguish the individual devices within radio networks with several
access points.
bus (also known as ISDN bus) is the series switching of up to 12 jacks for ISDN terminals
