Explanation of terms

Changing between two calls using the -key. The subscriber on hold hears a hold tone or mu-

Access control
Protective measure for preventing that unauthorized users have access to the own network.
Access point
The access point is the core part of each radio cell. It controls all connected computers.
ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. DSL connection with asymmetric bandwidth spreading for
data transmission and reception.
ADSL modem
Modem using the ASDL technology. In contrast to the usual modems, the ADSL modem can
send and receive on different frequency ranges.
AOCD
Method to transmit call charges from the network operator during the call.
AOCE
Method to transmit call charges from the network operator at the end of the call.
B-channel

Busy tone
Indicates that the line of the target subscriber called is busy or that there is no free line to estab-
lish the connection (congestion).
Call waiting tone
Different signals are used to indicate internal and external waiting calls.
Clients
Connected computers or users.
Conference
Interconnection of a maximum of three subscribers to conduct a conference call.
D-channel

DDI
"Direct Dialling-In": Phone number which is added to the basic telephone system's phone num-
ber in order to reach the desired person (also called extension number). The DDI does not have
to be but can be the same as the internal phone number of the subscriber.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP servers allocate free IP addresses to connected
computers upon booting.
Dialling tone
A distinction is made between the internal and external (exchange) dialling tone.
