DMZ
Demilitarized Zone: This function allows unlimited access to a network computer via the Inter-
net. It is used if the tunnelling function for the recognizing of special applications is not sufficient
for the proper functioning of an application.
DNS
Domain Name Server. The DNS translates IP addresses into names.
Downstream
Data stream from the Internet.
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line, also called T-DSL or ADSL. A DSL modem uses your available tele-
phone lines for the high-speed transmission of data.
DTMF
Dialling mode where the dialling information is transmitted via a tone sequence.
Dynamic IP
IP address allocated by the Internet provider, which is only valid for the duration of the session.
address
For the next session a new / other IP address will be assigned.
Exchange connection Way of setting up an external call. A distinction is made between manual, automatic, targeted
and VIP exchange connection.
Exchange tone
Network operator's dialling tone. Possibility to dial an external subscriber number.
Extension
This is the physical access for the connection of analogue or ISDN terminals. Several subscrib-
ers can be assigned to one extension.
Firewall
Mechanism for the protection of the own data against the Internet.
Forced disconnection Automatic disconnection of the Internet connection, usually every 24 hours. Normally, it is pos-
sible to dial-in again immediately after the forced disconnection.
Hold
Status of a connection without speech connection. Hold is used for features as for example
"Inquiry".
HTTP
Hypertext Mark up Transport Protocol. Describes the procedure of sending www.pages via the
Internet.
IEEE 802.11b
Official standard for radio networks with 11 Mbps.
IEEE 802.11b+
Radio networks with 22 Mbps.
Internal traffic
Communication connection between two internal subscribers of the telephone system. Internal
calls are free of charge.
IP
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP = Transmission on Control Protocol / Internet Protocol) for the data
communication within the Internet.
IP address
IP = "Internet Protocol". An IP address contains four numbers separated by a dot. By means of
an IP address one single, specific host computer can be identified in the Internet. Example:
192.34.45.8.
