Selecting IP Addresses for Your Network

In order for two devices (for example, a PC and a router) to communicate over a local network
using the Internet Protocol (IP), both devices must be assigned IP addresses. In addition, these
addresses must be within the same logical subnet, as determined by the network address and the
netmask. Refer to Chapter 1,
There are two options for determining the IP addresses for your local network. One method is to
use IP addresses that have been registered by your company or ISP. Registered addresses are
administered by InterNIC (
use private IP addresses and the NAT feature of your router. The Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF) has designated several ranges of nonunique addresses for use in private networks.
These addresses are hidden from the Internet when you use NAT.
Note: These private addresses are not guaranteed to be globally unique on the Internet;
therefore, you must be sure to configure your router to use NAT, which hides these
addresses from the Internet.
Choose one of the following options to determine IP addresses for your local network and router:
• Use the addresses specified by your ISP or network manager.
You must have at least two specific IP addresses, one for your PC and one for your router.
• Use private addresses and the NAT feature of your router.
Use private addresses if you are accessing an Internet account for which only a single dynamic
or static IP address is assigned and you have no other InterNIC-registered addresses for your
LAN and router.
If you have not been assigned registered IP addresses, NETGEAR recommends that you let the
DHCP server functionality of the router assign private addresses as described in
TCP/IP" on page 3-4.
