When a router is found, the Ethernet media access control (MAC) address of that router is
displayed in the dialog box. If this number matches the MAC address on the bottom label of your
router, FirstGear has found your router. If your router is not found, perform one of the following
procedures:
• You received an error message: WINSOCK not found
Your PC does not have TCP/IP software loaded or configured. Configure your PC for IP
networking, as described in
• A router is found, but not the one you want to configure.
Click Find Another to continue the search.
• The router you want to configure is not found.
Make sure the router is powered on for at least one minute before starting FirstGear. Check
the LAN connection from your PC to the hub (if used) to the router. Refer to Chapter 10,
"Troubleshooting," in Reference Guide for the Model RT328 ISDN Router.
Verify that the IP address shown, if any, is the address you want the router to use on your LAN.
If the router does not have an IP address, you must assign one now, following the instructions in
the next section.

Selecting IP Addresses for Your Network

In order for your PC to communicate with your Model RT328 router on the LAN, both devices
must be assigned IP addresses with the same network address, as determined by the netmask.
Refer to Chapter 1, "Introduction," and Chapter 7, "TCP/IP Configuration," in Reference Guide
for the Model RT328 Router for more information about IP addresses.
IP addresses for your network are usually assigned by your network manager or Internet service
provider (ISP). If you do not have assigned addresses, you can assign your own private addresses
within your LAN, using a pool of addresses designated by the Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF) for this purpose.
Note: These private addresses are not guaranteed to be globally unique on the Internet;
therefore, you must be sure to configure your Model RT328 router to use NAT, which
hides these addresses from the Internet.
