Reference Guide for the Model RT338 ISDN Router

Connecting the Serial Cable (Optional)

If you are planning to configure your router using a serial connection instead of a telnet
connection, you must connect the serial cable to the MANAGER port on the rear panel of the
router.
To connect the serial cable:
Plug one end of the 9-pin RS-232 cable into the MANAGER port.
1.
Plug the other end into a serial port (such as COM1 or COM2) of your PC.
2.
Note: You must use the included 9-pin to 25-pin adapter if your PC has only a 25-pin
port available.

Connecting to the ISDN Port

The ISDN cable has an 8-pin RJ-45 connector on one end and a 6-pin RJ-11 connector on the other
end. Plug the 8-pin connector into the ISDN port of the router. Connect the other end of the cable
directly to your ISDN wall jack. Your wall jack may have either an 8-pin RJ-45 or a 6-pin RJ-11
connector. The 6-pin cable connector plugs into the center of an 8-pin wall jack.

Connecting the Ethernet Cable

The LAN port on the Model RT338 router is wired as a PC rather than as a hub. Follow the
procedures below that are appropriate for your installation. If you are connecting to a 100Mbps
Fast Ethernet network or a mixed 10/100Mbps network, remember that all 100Mbps connections
should be made with Category 5 rated Ethernet cable, such as those included with your router.

Connecting the Model RT338 Router to a Single PC

To connect the router to a single PC:
Connect the LAN port of the Model RT338 router directly to the PC's Ethernet port
using the red crossover Ethernet cable that is included with your router.
