NIBP: Description
Blood pressure is monitored noninvasively in the Dash 2500 Patient Monitor by a
noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) parameter that uses the oscillometric method
of measurement. The oscillometric method measures the amplitude of the
pressure oscillations within the blood pressure cuff. Further information about
the oscillometric method is listed under Principles of Noninvasive Blood Pressure
Determination.
Systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, mean arterial pressure, and cuff pressure
are displayed in the NIBP vital signs area. The time elapsed since the last
determination appears in the NIBP field for a period of 120 minutes. After 120
minutes, the NIBP value appears as dashes. Pulse rate derived from NIBP may
be displayed in the HR field. Directions for obtaining the pulse rate from NIBP are
in the HR/Pulse section of this manual.
The NIBP parameter has three operating modes: manual, auto (and custom
auto), and stat. The selected mode is shown on the screen. In manual mode,
which you access by pushing the NIBP Go/Stop hardkey, the NIBP parameter
determines the blood pressure one time. In auto mode, which you access from
the Setup NIBP menu or by quick-pushing the NIBP Auto hardkey, the NIBP
parameter determines the blood pressure at specified time intervals from 1 to
120 minutes. In custom auto mode, which you access from the Setup NIBP
menu, the NIBP parameter determines the blood pressure at user-specified time
intervals that best suit your clinical situation. In stat mode, which you access by
push-and-holding the NIBP Auto hardkey until a confirmation tone sounds, the
NIBP parameter determines the blood pressure as many times as possible in 5
minutes.
The NIBP algorithm is optimized for two different patient populations: Adult/
Pediatric patients and Neonate patients, and it operates very differently for
each. To allow for varying hose lengths in the future, the algorithm no longer
automatically bases the type of determination it performs on the length of the
hose. The cuff or hose type, and therefore the type of determination performed,
now follows the patient type of the Monitor as displayed in the upper left hand
corner of the screen (when the menu is closed) or in the Choose patient settings
menu option in the Admit patient menu.
Audible and visible alarms warn you when a value for systolic pressure, diastolic
pressure, mean arterial pressure, or pulse rate (when NIBP is the source) is
outside the selected high or low limit.
The NIBP parameter is indicated for use in noninvasive monitoring of blood
pressure and pulse rate as a component of the Dash 2500 Patient Monitor. This
device is not designed, sold, or intended for use except as indicated.
