RESP: Description
Respirations are monitored in the Dash 2500 Patient Monitor by the RESP
parameter. Respiration rate using the ECG electrodes is designated RESP. As
long as patient data is being collected and analyzed by the ECG parameter, and
the RESP parameter is not off-line, a respiration rate value appears in the vital
signs area of the screen.
Respiration monitoring is accomplished by measuring the thoracic impedance
between two electrodes. As the patient breathes, the movement of the chest
changes the impedance, and the differences produce the respiration rate in the
RESP vital signs area of the screen.
Respiration rate (RESP) automatically appears when the ECG parameter can
display waveforms for lead I, II or III, and the Turn on RESP with ECG? option
under the config resp menu is turned on. If the Turn on RESP with ECG? option
is turned off, RESP does not appear until it is selected from the Setup
parameters option in the Main Menu.
Audible and visible alarms warn you when the respiration rate is outside the
selected high or low limit.
The Dash 2500 Patient Monitor, when used with appropriate parameters, is
indicated for monitoring respiration rate. This device is not designed, sold, or
intended for use as an apnea monitor.
WARNING
Certain artifact conditions and some pacemakers can cause
inaccurate detection of impedance respirations. Pacemakers
may cause sufficient artifact to trigger false detection of
respiration. Always observe pacemaker patients closely.
Procedures
1. If you intend to use the ECG electrodes as the source of respiration rate,
make sure that the electrodes are positioned properly for measuring
impedance respiration. Refer to "Electrode Placement Site" in the ECG
section for correct positioning.
2. Choose RESP from the Setup parameters option in the Main Menu, and set
up the desired monitoring parameters.
