Glossary
Configuration conflict
Indicates a combination that may not operate
correctly as a system.
Console (Terminal)
A device that allows the operator to
communicate with and control the computer. A
keyboard and display are standard, but other
I/O devices are also sometimes used.
DAT
Digital Audio Tape. A kind of magnetic tape
originally designed for audio format, now also
used by computers to back up data. The
physical specification of DAT for audio also
applies to the DAT for computer. However,
their quality and performance are different.
Data Packet
A sub-set of the data (including control signals)
that forms a single transmission unit.
DIMM
Dual Inline Memory Module. It is one of
memory modules. DIMMs are classified by the
number of pins, such as 72, 144, and 168. Each
side of a DIMM sends out signals independent
of those from the other side.
Disk Drive Bay
A (metal) frame affixed inside the server or a
standalone cabinet that is designed to accept a
hard disk drive (or other, similarly sized device,
e.g. CD-ROM drive, etc.).
152
Disk Drive Cage
A rack of disk drive bays in the server or a
standalone cabinet.
Disk Formatting
Before data can be read from/written to a hard
disk, the disk must have (or be given) an
underlying logical structure, or format, that the
OS is able to recognize.
ECC
Error Checking and Correction. Examines and
corrects errors based on the error correcting
code. Generally, diagnosis can be performed in
wider range than corrections.
Ethernet
A local area network (LAN) protocol
developed by Xerox Corporation. The initial
data transfer rate specification was 3 Mbps.
With Ethernet 2.0 established by Xerox, Intel,
and DEC, the specification for transfer rate was
upgraded to 10 Mbps. In order to comply with
ISO standards, the Ethernet specification has
now become the basis for the IEEE802.3
standard.

Hot swapping

The ability to take down, remove, replace, and
bring back up individual components of the
system without having to shut the system
down. This allows maintenance and
replacement of defective parts to be performed
even while the system continues to run, a vital
ability for 24/7/365 hardware.
