Data cartridge handling precautions

Equipment damage/Data destruction
Pay attention to the following when handling data cartridges. If these precautions
are not observed the unit may be damaged or data may be lost.
l Avoid using or storing data cartridges in the following environments and locations:
- Environments subject to extreme temperatures and humidity
- Dirty environments (cigarette smoke, dust, corrosive gases, etc.)
- Locations that are likely to adversely affect the magnetic tape material
- Locations subject to sunlight
- Locations subject to impact or vibrations
- Locations near heating equipment
l When a data cartridge is not to be used for a long time, remove it from the DAT
drive, and put it in its case. Store under the following conditions:
Temperature: 5-32
Humidity: 20-60% (non-condensing)
l Do not place data cartridges in an area subject to liquid spills.
l Do not drop data cartridges on the floor or subject them to impact.
l Do not open the tape cover or turn the tape reel unnecessarily.
l Do not force data cartridges into the DAT drive.
l If the ambient temperature or humidity changes rapidly, wait for the data cartridge
to adapt to the new conditions (at least one hour) before inserting it in the DAT
drive.
l Each data cartridge has a long but limited service life. This varies according to the
operating environment (temperature, humidity, dust, etc.) and condition of the DAT
drive. Generally, replace data cartridges with new after they have been used 75
times or after one year of use, whichever occurs first.
