5.1.3

Formatting hard disk drives

4When a disk is formatted, any data on the disk is lost. It is important to take care
when selecting the drive to be formatted.
4Back up important data before formatting a disk drive.
The disk drives are pre-formatted at the factory. Initial formatting at the site is not
required.
If, for some reason, a new hard disk drive must be formatted, use the Solaris
Operating Environment format utility and select "Auto configure" to format the disk
drive.
5.1.4

Backing up data

The hard disk drives used in the PRIMEPOWER are highly reliable. Even so, drive
malfunctions can occasionally occur. If a disk drive malfunctions, the recorded data
either will not be recoverable, or could take an extremely long time to recover. As a
precaution against unexpected data loss, it is recommended that the site perform
periodic backups of valuable data to tape drives.
5.1.5

Hot swapping hard disk drives

Data destruction
Contact a certified service engineer if a hard disk drive must be hot swapped.
Data may be lost if the hot swap procedure is not performed correctly.
4Users must use disk mirroring software to mirror the hard disk drives before the
hot swapping feature can be used. The disk mirroring software
"PRIMECLUSTER GDS" is available from Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens Computers.
Once enabled, hard disk drives installed on the main unit are hot swappable. Use the
software tools (Machine Administration Menus) contained in the Enhanced Support
Facility to perform hot swapping. For details on how to swap hard disk drives, refer
to the Machine Administration Guide supplied with the Enhanced Support Facility.
