3.2.5 TRANSMISSION OPERA TION AND
SHIFT SCHEDULING
Th e t r a n sm ission cover ed in t h is m a n u a l h a s

t u r e of t h e t r a n sm ission oil. Th e t r a n sm ission oil
t em per a t u r e h a s a decisive effect on t h e sh ift qu a l-
it y of t h e t r a n sm ission . Th e sh ift sch edu le is m odi-
fied t o ext en d t h e life of t h e t r a n sm ission wh ile
oper a t in g u n der ext r em e con dit ion s a n d t o im pr ove
dr iver com for t by m odifyin g sh ift sch edu les.
Th e t r a n sm ission oil t em per a t u r e is m ea su r ed
wit h a Tem per a t u r e Sen sor on t h e NAG1 t r a n sm is-
sion . Th e Tem per a t u r e Sen sor is a n in t egr a l com -
pon en t of t h e Tr a n sm ission Solen oid a ssem bly. If
t h e Tem per a t u r e Sen sor is ca u sin g a pr oblem , a
DTC will be set in t h e TCM.
Th e Tr a n sm ission Tem per a t u r e Sen sor is wir ed in
ser ies wit h t h e P a r k /Neu t r a l (P /N) swit ch . Th e P /N
swit ch is a lso loca t ed in t h e t r a n sm ission . Th e t r a n s-
m ission t em per a t u r e is on ly r ea d by t h e TCM wh en
t h e P /N swit ch closes wh ile in t h e R, D posit ion .

3.3 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Dia gn ost ic t r ou ble codes (DTC's) a r e codes st or ed
by t h e Tr a n sm ission Con t r ol Modu le (TCM) a n d t h e
Sh ift Lever Assem bly Modu le (SLA) t o h elp dia g-
n ose Tr a n sm ission a n d Sh ift er pr oblem s. Th ey a r e
viewed u sin g t h e DRBIII sca n t ool.
Alwa ys begin by per for m in g a visu a l in spect ion of
t h e wir in g, con n ect or s, cooler lin es a n d t h e t r a n s-
m ission . An y obviou s wir in g pr oblem s or lea ks
sh ou ld be r epa ir ed pr ior t o per for m in g a n y dia gn os-

a ffect t h e veh icles t r a n sm ission , it will r equ est (via

m ission DTC's will be st or ed in t h e TCM.
3.3.1 ACTIVE (HARD) CODE
An y Dia gn ost ic Tr ou ble Code (DTC) t h a t is set

a n Act ive code. Th is m ea n s t h a t t h e pr oblem is

3.3.2 STORED (INTERMITTENT) CODE
A dia gn ost ic t r ou ble code t h a t is n ot t h er e ever y
t im e t h e TCM ch ecks t h e cir cu it or fu n ct ion is a
St or ed (In t er m it t en t ) code. P r oblem s t h a t com e a n d
go like t h is a r e t h e m ost difficu lt t o dia gn ose, t h ey
m u st be looked for u n der t h e specific con dit ion s
t h a t ca u se t h em . If t h e DTC is r eset (a ft er a n
ign it ion cycle) t h e DTC will be set t o St or ed (In t er-
m it t en t ) st a t u s. A DTC st a t u s ca n be Act ive or
St or ed (In t er m it t en t ). Act ive is wh en t h e DTC is
pr esen t in t h e con t r oller a n d t h e t r a n sm ission is in
t h e pa r t icu la r m ode of oper a t ion for t h a t DTC.
