GEN ERAL I N FORM AT I ON
Th e NAG1 will defa u lt in t h e cu r r en t gea r posit ion
if a DTC is det ect ed, t h en a ft er a key cycle or sh ift
t o pa r k t h e t r a n sm ission will go in t o Lim p-in , wh ich
is m ech a n ica l 2n d gea r. Som e DTC's m a y a llow t h e
t r a n sm ission t o r esu m e n or m a l oper a t ion (r ecover )
if t h e det ect ed pr oblem goes a wa y. P er m a n en t
lim p-in DTC will r ecover wh en t h e key is cycled, bu t
if t h e sa m e DTC is det ect ed for t h r ee key cycles t h e
syst em will n ot r ecover a n d t h e DTC m u st be
clea r ed fr om t h e TCM wit h t h e DRBIII sca n t ool.
On ce t h e DRBIII is in t h e Tr a n sm ission por t ion
of t h e dia gn ost ic pr ogr a m , it con st a n t ly m on it or s
t h e TCM t o see if t h e syst em is in lim p-in m ode. If
t h e t r a n sm ission is in lim p-in m ode, t h e DRBIII
will fla sh t h e r ed LE D.
3.2.1 CONTROLLER MODES OF
OPERA TION
P e rm a n e n t lim p -in m o d e
Wh en t h e TCM det er m in es t h er e is a n on -
r ecover a ble con dit ion pr esen t t h a t will n ot a llow
pr oper t r a n sm ission oper a t ion , it will pla ce t h e
t r a n sm ission in per m a n en t lim p-in m ode. Wh en t h e
con dit ion occu r s t h e TCM will t u r n off a ll solen oids
a s well a s t h e solen oid su pply ou t pu t cir cu it . If t h is
occu r s wh ile t h e veh icle is m ovin g, t h e t r a n sm ission
will r em a in in t h e cu r r en t gea r u n t il t h e ign it ion is
t u r n ed off or sh ift er is pla ced in t h e P posit ion .
On ce t h e sh ift er h a s been pla ced in P t h e Tr a n s-
m ission will on ly a llow 2n d gea r oper a t ion . If t h e

dr opped below 8.5 volt s it will disa ble volt a ge de-

t h a t t h e volt a ge h a s r isen a bove 9.0 volt s, n or m a l

3.2.2 MIL ILLUMINA TION
F or fa ilu r es det ect ed by t h e Tr a n sm ission Con -
t r oller t h a t r esu lt in t h e con t r oller pla cin g t h e
t r a n sm ission in t o a lim p-in m ode, except for Syst em
Over volt a ge a n d Syst em Un der volt a ge DTCs, t h e
MIL will be illu m in a t ed. Th e Tr a n sm ission Con t r ol
Modu le will in for m t h e E CM over t h e CAN bu s t h a t
a fa ilu r e h a s occu r r ed. Th e E CM will illu m in a t e t h e
MIL. If t h e con dit ion is r em oved a n d t h e fa ilu r e
becom es St or ed (In t er m it t en t ), t h e Tr a n sm ission
con t r oller will st op r epor t in g t h a t t h e DTC is a ct ive
a n d t h e E CM will ext in gu ish t h e MIL.
NOTE: The MIL will light when the problem is
first detected and it will not go off until the
next
ignition
cycle,
conditions have been checked for their
presence.

3.2.3 SOLENOIDS
1-2/4-5 s o le n o id - Th e 1-2/4-5 solen oid is a ct iva t ed
wh en t h e TCM det er m in es t h a t t h e t r a n sm ission
m u st sh ift in t o or ou t of 2n d gea r or 5t h gea r. Th e
solen oid is on ly a ct iva t ed du r in g t h e sh ift in g of t h e
t r a n sm ission . Wh en t h e solen oid is a ct iva t ed, h y-
dr a u lic pr essu r e is a pplied t o t h e pr oper sh ift ele-
m en t s in t h e t r a n sm ission t o a llow t h e desir ed sh ift .
On ce t h e sh ift is com plet ed, t h e solen oid is t u r n ed
off.
2-3 s o le n o id - Th e 2-3 solen oid is a ct iva t ed wh en
t h e TCM det er m in es t h a t t h e t r a n sm ission m u st
sh ift in t o or ou t of 3r d gea r. Th e solen oid is on ly
a ct iva t ed du r in g t h e sh ift in g of t h e t r a n sm ission .
Wh en t h e solen oid is a ct iva t ed h ydr a u lic pr essu r e
is a pplied t o t h e pr oper sh ift elem en t s in t h e t r a n s-
m ission t o a llow t h e desir ed sh ift . On ce t h e sh ift is
com plet ed, t h e solen oid is t u r n ed off.
