Before you begin
Attention: Replacing the management card and the system-board at the same time might result in the
loss of vital product data (VPD) and information about the number of active processor cores. If the
management card and system-board must both be replaced, replace them one at a time. For further
assistance, contact your next level of support.
About this task
Note: For more information about the locations of the connectors and LEDs on the system-board, see
"System-board layouts" on page 13.
To replace the system-board and chassis assembly, complete the following steps:
Procedure
1. Read the Safety topic and the "Installation guidelines" on page 35.
2. Is the compute node managed by a management console?
Yes
Continue with step 3.
No
Continue with step 5 on page 85.
3. If the compute node has Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) installed or uses more than one partition, have
the customer back up partition profile data by using one of the following methods:
v If this system is managed by an IBM Flex System Manager (FSM) management console, back up
partition profile data. Using the Systems management command-line interface (SMCLI), enter the
bkprofdata command. See smcli - Systems management command-line interface
(http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/topic/com.ibm.acc.8731.doc/
com.ibm.director.cli.helps.doc/fqm0_r_cli_smcli.html). For more information about the bkprofdata
command, see BKPROFDATA (http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/flexsys/information/
topic/com.ibm.acc.psm.reference.doc/manpages/psm.bkprofdata.html).
Note: If the backup operation fails because the compute node is in an error state, save the
configuration files by using the log collection tool. See Collecting pedbg on Flex System Manager
(FSM) (https://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas777a837116ee2fca8862578320079823c).
v If this system is managed by an Hardware Management Console (HMC), back up the partition
profile data by using the HMC. See Backing up the partition profile data (http://
pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/p7hbm/backupprofdata.htm).
Note: If the backup fails because the compute node is in an error state, save the configuration files
by using the log collection tool. See Version 7 or 8 HMC: Collecting PEDBG from the HMC
(http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1018878).
v If this system is managed by an Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM), back up the partition
profile data. Using the IVM command line, enter the bkprofdata command. For more information
about the bkprofdata command, see IVM bkprofdata command (http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/
infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/p7hcg/bkprofdata.htm).
If no backup data is available and the back-up partition profile data operation fails, the partition
details cannot be restored. The partitions must be rebuilt after hardware recovery.
Note: Although the FSM and HMC management consoles automatically save partition profile data,
which is used for recovery in step 28 on page 88, the manual partition profile data backup that is
completed in step 3 is recommended as a precaution and best practice before you replace the
system-board.
