System reliability guidelines

Follow these guidelines to help ensure proper cooling and system reliability.
v Verify that the ventilation holes on the compute node are not blocked.
v Verify that you are maintaining proper system cooling in the unit.
Do not operate the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis without a compute node, expansion unit, or
filler node installed in each bay. See the documentation for your IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis
for additional information.
v Verify that you have followed the reliability guidelines for the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis.
v Verify that the compute node battery is operational. If the battery becomes defective, replace it
immediately, as described in "Removing the battery" on page 64 and "Installing the battery" on page
65.

Handling static-sensitive devices

Static electricity can damage the compute node and other electronic devices. To avoid damage, keep
static-sensitive devices in their static-protective packages until you are ready to install them.
About this task
Attention:
To reduce the possibility of damage from electrostatic discharge, observe the following precautions:
v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you.
v Handle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.
v Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed circuitry.
v Do not leave the device where others can handle and damage it.
v While the device is still in its static-protective package, touch it to an unpainted metal part of the IBM
Flex System Enterprise Chassis or any unpainted metal surface on any other grounded rack component
in the rack that you are installing the device in for at least 2 seconds. This drains static electricity from
the package and from your body.
v Remove the device from its package and install it directly into the compute node without setting down
the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, put it back into its static-protective package. Do
not place the device on the compute node cover or on a metal surface.
v Take additional care when handling devices during cold weather. Heating dry winter air further
reduces its humidity and increases static electricity.
