OMR Definitions

OMR. Symbology that is composed of a series of fields (or "placeholders") of uniform
width that are either empty or contain a mark (a bar also of uniform width) in their cen-
ters. A cell with a mark is equivalent to a binary 1, an empty cell is represented by a
binary 0. Typical OMR symbols contain from 8 to 32 fields.
Gate Bar. The first bar in the OMR symbol relates to the decoding direction.
Cell. (Sometimes referred to as a "field.") The area in which a mark is present or
absent. The cell is wider than the mark.
Bar or Mark. A bar which can be present inside a cell.
Test Pattern. OMR symbol used to calibrate the scanner during initial setup.
Bar height
The sketch above shows a 9 cell OMR symbol with 9 bars. The dashed outline of the
fields serves as a visual demonstration and is not visible when printed. The first cell
always contains a gate bar which serves to locate the symbol. The last cell can contain
a parity bar.
