Chapter 1
• For the most accurate display, set your "Monitors" Control Panel to the maximum
number of colors available. "Thousands" or "Millions" of colors will provide an
excellent display of your image. If your system only supports a maximum of 256
colors you will see a 'dithered' image, which looks 'soft', and is difficult to adjust or
edit accurately. The monitor setting has no effect on the actual quality of your
image, which is always captured in 24-bit mode (16.7 million colors).
• Color images can occupy large amounts of disk space. Make sure your hard disk
has sufficient free space to store the images you plan to scan. You should have at
least 60 megabytes of free space available if you plan on maximum resolution scans.

Before You Begin

Before proceeding, make a backup copy of your master diskettes! Store the master
diskettes in a safe place. Always work with the backup copies to install the software.
In "Getting Started" you will learn the basics of how to perform a scan, thus get-
ting you up and running within the shortest time possible. "Getting Started" provides
condensed instruction that will lead you through your first scan, using the enclosed sam-
ple slide. Don't worry if you do not understand some of the terminology and concepts
introduced here. The goal is to familiarize yourself with the controls by performing a
routine scan.
You will probably require about one half-hour to complete this trial run. In that
time you will gain a working knowledge of the scanning system. Nikon scanners are
designed to yield a high quality scan requiring little user intervention. You need only
properly insert the film in the scanner, launch the scanning software, and select the
S
command. However, if you would like a thorough explanation of the scanner
CAN
controls, color imaging techniques, and color separation guidelines, we strongly recom-
mend reading the entire contents of this manual.
