Dimensional Units

As you learned in a previous section, the width and height units of measure can be
specified as pixels, inches, cm, mm, picas, or points, depending on your preference. For
Macintosh, the final resolution units can be specified as pixels per inch, pixels per cm,
or pixels per mm. For Windows, the resolution units can be specified as dots per inch,
dots per cm, or dots per mm. Note that dots and pixels are functionally the same.
Typically, the width and height are specified in the same units of measure. The final
resolution uses either inches, cm or mm, based on the selection of units of measure for
the width and height.

Resolution and Scan Pitch

Resolution is a measure of the amount of data per unit area. The units are pixels.
The unit measure is either inches, cm's or mm's. This is called Final Res, short for final
resolution.
