Chapter 13
As an opposite example, suppose that the photograph has very high contrast, i.e.
very bright highlights and dark shadows. If the contrast is reduced, it may be easier to
reproduce later on paper.
The approximate results of changing the contrast can be seen while the preview
image is on the screen. However, as you have learned here, care should be taken when
performing these adjustments.

Adjusting Contrast

Macintosh: The plug-in's Contrast button, the half-black, half-white circle in the
Scan dialog, allows you to set the contrast value either through the associated Contrast
value edit box or Contrast slider control. The Contrast value edit box can be changed
by clicking in the box, or Tabbing into it, and entering the new value. The contrast
value can range from -15 to +15. Clicking on the Contrast button without releasing it
invokes the Contrast slider, shown in Figure 13.6a, which allows you to drag a white
slider control to select the contrast value.

The Brightness control, and Red, Green and Blue exposure controls function in
the same manner as the Contrast control. You can enter a number directly into the
value edit box associated with each control or you can use the associated slider controls.
Again, to access the slider controls, click-and-hold the selected button down and move
the mouse left and right to change the graphical position of the marker in the slider bar.
Windows: The plug-in's Contrast button, the half-black, half-white circle in the
Scan dialog, allows you to set the contrast value through the associated Contrast value
edit box. The Contrast value edit box can be changed by clicking in the box, or tabbing
into it, and entering the new value. The contrast value can range from -15 to +15.
