Focusing with Coolscan

Metered Focus Method

Click on the F
ates the Metered Focus method. This will prompt the appearance of the Focus Level
Meter.

Focus Level Meter

The Focus Level Meter dialog, seen in Figure 14.2, should now appear on your
screen. You can now adjust the focus wheel on the front of the scanner. As the wheel is
moved you can see the resulting changes to the meter on your screen. As Coolscan
repetitively scans the selected spot, the Focus Level Meter's movements indicate the
results of a focus measure. The meter value, indicated by the black bar, indicates the
sharpness of focus. The optimal focus is achieved by positioning the meter indicator as
far to the right as possible.
Remember, the best focus that Coolscan can achieve is dependent on the sharp-
ness of the image. Some images may not contain sharp details to focus on. In such
cases, focus on the grain of the film using the Visual Focus method.
