If you move the mouse over the preview area, you will see that it becomes a magn-
ifying glass with crosshairs in the center. Place this cursor over the area you wish to
focus on, then click the mouse button.
The scanner will take a small high-resolution grayscale scan and display it in the
preview area. You may then adjust the focus by using the slider, which has now become
active, or the F
OCUS
focus settings are in the area of 24 for slides mounted in plastic.

Performing a Preview Scan

There are several scanning parameters which you can change that affect the out-
come of the preview scan. Each of these is controlled through the Scan dialog and the
Gamma Curve Editor dialog boxes, as indicated in Table 10.1.

Conversely, the preview scan is also controlled by preset parameters that you can-
not change. These include position, width, height and resolution. These are all dis-
cussed in Chapter Eleven of this manual.
Once the preview scan is finished, you can view the image, adjust the scanning
settings, and crop the image in preparation for the final scan.
