This technique, while providing the finest control over the image, will require a
good deal of trial and error to achieve the best results. Depending on how critical your
results are and how much time you have to achieve them, you may want to rely on the
scanner's automated gamma controls instead.

Forcing a Gamma Curve to Linear

In some cases, a linear gamma curve offers a better starting point for adjustments
than the default gamma curve. Clicking the Force Linear button in the Gamma Curve
Editor dialog, shown in Figure 16.27, 'forces' whichever gamma curve is active to a lin-
ear, or 1:1 state.
