Chapter 12
Film Type and Orientation

The Image Orientation Controls

There are two types of picture orientation, commonly called portrait and lands-
cape. In order for the image files created by the Nikon Scanner plug-in to be oriented
and displayed correctly, the plug-in has to be told the orientation of the image on the
film and the film type. Otherwise, it may be necessary to flip the image either horizon-
tally or vertically after the preview scan is executed.

Portrait/Landscape Button in Portrait Mode

The Portrait/Landscape button toggles the image orientation between landscape
and portrait modes. When the button is in the portrait mode, it is displayed as seen in
Figure 12.1.

Portrait/Landscape Button in Landscape Mode

Clicking the mouse on this button when it is in the portrait mode causes the
image orientation to rotate 90 degrees into the landscape mode, as shown in Figure
12.2. Clicking the mouse on this button when it is in the landscape mode causes the
image orientation to rotate 90 degrees into the portrait mode, and the button's face
changes accordingly.
With Coolscan, since the film is always inserted into the scanner slot assuming a
portrait mode (narrow side first), a rotation is necessary if the final scan is to be in land-
scape mode. When a final scan is performed in this landscape orientation, the image
data will be rotated during the scan and written to disk correctly as a landscape image.
