Each device on a network (regardless of the size of the network) must have a unique
IP address. These networked devices must be on the same subnet in order to
communicate without any special inter-connecting hardware (for example, a
router).
To communicate with your Matrox Iris E-Series initially, your computer must be
on the 169.254 subnet. If your computer is not on the 169.254 subnet, you must
change your computer's IP address and subnet mask, even if only to change it back
again later.

To change your computer's IP address and subnet mask to be on the same initial
subnet as your Matrox Iris E-Series in Windows XP, perform the following:
