• Subnet. A subnet is the portion of an IP address that must be common between
computers for direct communication to occur. Special hardware (routers) is
required for computers on different subnets to communicate. The subnet is
defined by an IP address and a subnet mask. IP addresses and subnet masks are
written in dotted decimal notation (each group of numbers is separated by a
period). The numbers your subnet mask that are identical to your IP address (that
is, that are not set to 0) show your subnet address. For example, if an IP address
of 169.254.17.26 has a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, the subnet address would be
169.254. If an IP address of 192.168.12.34 has a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0,
the subnet address would be 192.168.12.

The IP address of your computer shows you whether you are on the same subnet
as your Matrox Iris E-Series. Note that if you have never connected your computer
to another network device, your computer might not have an IP address.
To find the IP address of your computer, perform the following:
1. Open a command prompt and type the following at the prompt:
ipconfig /all
The information presented will include the IP address and subnet mask used by
your computer.
2. If you are on a LAN, either print this screen of information or write this
information down in a safe place. You will need this information later.
In a peer-to-peer network, after connecting to your Matrox Iris E-Series, your
computer should have an IP address.
