IMBER SMART – Industrial Series
5.5.3 VRRP
The Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is a computer networking protocol that
automatically assigns available Internet Protocol (IP) routers to participating hosts. The VRRP router
with the highest number becomes the virtual master router. VRRP router numbers range from 1 to
255, where 255 is usually used for highest priority and 100 for backup priority. If the current virtual
master router receives an announcement from a group member (Router ID) with a higher priority,
the latter will pre-empt and become the virtual master router.
