Fiber Measurement

This measurement example uses a spool of fiber with a zero dispersion
wavelength of approximately 1575 nm.
This measurement procedure will include both a swept and a stepped
measurment. Stepped measurements take more time to run, but provide
you with the highest measurement accuracy. Some measurement settings
apply to both swept and stepped measurements, but some are set specific
for a stepped or a swept measurement. In the following procedure, we will
start with a swept measurement, then continue with the stepped
measurement. The stepped measurement process will only call out the
settings that are different for the two measurement types.
There are two different ways to access the instrument settings: from the
front panel keys or from the menu bar. The front panel keys are separated
into groupings by a group name which corresponds to the display menu
bar names. For example, the Setup group of front panel keys has the exact
same functions as the Setup menu on the menu bar. Either access method
can be used alone or in combination for any measurement.
Before connecting any patchcords, you must clean the optical
connections on the cable, device under test (DUT), and the ODA.
Use cotton swabs and alcohol to clean the connectors, and then
blow the connector surface dry with compressed air. For more
information,
refer to "Cleaning Connections for Accurate
Measurements" on page
