Setting Up the Optical Dispersion Analyzer

Agilent 86038A Optical Dispersion Analyzer, Third Edition
Fiber-Optic connectors are easily damaged when connected to dirty
or damaged cables and accessories. When you use improper
cleaning and handling techniques, you risk expensive instrument
repairs, damaged cables, and compromised measurements. Before
you connect any fiber-optic cable to the ODA,

2 Install the TLS module into the mainframe by sliding the module in from the rear
of the mainframe and tightening the four thumb screws on the rear panel.
3 Install the TLS front cover.
The PNA and test set are assembled as one unit.The combined
weight of the performance network analyzer and test set is 35 kg (76
lbs). The removal of these instruments requires two persons using
proper lifting techniques.
4 Place the performance network analyzer (PNA) and test set on top of the TLS
mainframe.
5 On the rear panel, connect the cables as shown in
6 Connect the USB hub to the USB port. Connect the mouse and keyboard to the
USB hub. (Alternately, you can connect either the keyboard or mouse to the USB
port on the front panel.)
7 On the front panel, connect the 40 cm insulated patchcord between TLS Output
2 and the TLS Input as shown in
8 Turn on the PNA and TLS and allow the instruments to warm up for 90 minutes.
For the Wavelength Meter Option Only
9 Place the 86122A multi-wavelength meter on top of the PNA.
10 Connect a GPIB cable from the 86122A to the GPIB port on either the PNA or
TLS mainframe.
11 On the 86122A, press Setup > GPIB Setup and set the address to 10.
12 Connect a patchcord from the 86122A Optical Input to TLS Output 1.
13 Continue with "Performance Verification" on page 20.
