Introduction

This chapter contains specifications and characteristics for the
Agilent 86038A optical dispersion analyzer. For specifications specific to
the 81640 tunable laser sources refer to the specifications chapter in the
Tunable Laser Modules User's Guide.
Agilent Technologies does not recommend installing any additional
software on the system controller. Some third party software, including
printer drivers, may impair system operation.
The distinction between specifications and characteristics is described
as follows:
• Specifications describe warranted system performance for the temperature
range of 25 °C ± 5 °K after 90 minutes of warm-up.
• Characteristics provide useful, but nonwarranted information about the func
tions and performance of the instrument. Characteristics are printed in italics.
Characteristics represent any one of the following:
•The average or median value based on a significant number of units.
•A tolerance interval or proportion of performance distribution derived from the
measurement of a significant number of units. The proportion is greater than
80%.
•A parameter with a quantity that is not subject to variations.
•Specifications and characteristics apply over the following instrument operat-
ing conditions:
•DUT pigtail fibers thermally protected, fixed, and settled for 3 minutes before
test.
•Measurements over the 1520 nm to 1610 nm wavelength range of the tunable
laser source (TLS) which has Side Mode Suppression Ratio (SMSR) > 40 dB.
•The instruments temperature has been stabilized after 90 minutes of continu-
ous operation.
